WASHINGTON, D.C. - The House of Representatives has passed the Road to Recovery Act, a bill sponsored by Representative John James of Michigan. This legislation aims to address the pressing issue of opioid addiction and substance abuse in the United States. The Road to Recovery Act is the third bill introduced by Rep. James to successfully pass the House this year.
The bill was included in the Support for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act, which provides assistance to communities combatting substance use and abuse. Rep. James expressed his gratitude for the bipartisan support the bill received, stating, "Opioids have taken a toll on Americans all over the country but especially states like Michigan. I'm grateful that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle could come together in getting individuals the help they need."
With the holiday season approaching, there is concern that individuals struggling with addiction may face increased isolation and depression. Rep. James emphasized the importance of the Road to Recovery Act in providing essential funding, support, and treatment to ensure that no American suffers alone.
The Road to Recovery Act specifically reauthorizes Section 7152 of the SUPPORT Act. This section provides critical resources for SAMHSA's National Helpline, a 24/7, confidential treatment referral and information service for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. The helpline offers referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations.
Having passed the House, the Road to Recovery Act will now move to the Senate for consideration. It is expected to gain approval in the Senate and ultimately be signed into law by the President. The passage of this legislation marks a significant step towards addressing the opioid crisis and providing much-needed support to individuals and communities affected by substance abuse.
