WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative John James (MI-10) and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (TX-10) have introduced the Enhance Cooperation Against Terrorism Act. This legislation aims to enhance security cooperation between countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, particularly those combatting the threat posed by Iran and its proxies while promoting normalization efforts with Israel.
In a statement, Rep. John James highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “October 7th and the continued attacks by Iran-backed proxies including the Houthis in the Red Sea have exposed President Biden’s failed foreign policy." He emphasized the need for America to take a proactive stance in addressing the threat from Iran and furthering cooperation with Israel.
Regarding the legislation, Rep. John James explained, “The Enhance Cooperation Against Terrorism Act creates an incentive to enhance security in the Middle East against threats from Iran, while also furthering cooperation with Israel." He also noted the benefits for his constituents, mentioning, “This legislation also serves communities like Michigan’s 10 Congressional District by helping expedite the work to improve and modernize our foreign military sales, in turn strengthening our defense industrial base."
Chairman McCaul echoed the sentiment, expressing the necessity for collaboration in the face of Iran’s global disruptions. He stated, “From Yemen to Ukraine, Iran is wreaking havoc around the globe. We must do all we can to ensure our partners and allies are working together – with the U.S. and each other – to address these shared threats." He further emphasized the importance of the bill in promoting cooperation and countering the threats posed by Iran and its proxies.
The Enhance Cooperation Against Terrorism Act includes provisions to expedite defense transfers with countries advancing diplomatic relations with Israel and engaging in regional security cooperation against Iran and its proxies. Additionally, it mandates a strategy to address security threats and obstacles, while safeguarding against the transfer of defense articles to potential adversaries like China and Russia.
