Representative John James (MI-10) has presented a comprehensive school safety legislative package to the U.S. House of Representatives. The package includes three bipartisan bills aimed at addressing the issue of school safety.
In a statement, Rep. James highlighted the personal significance of this issue, stating, "My generation was still in school when the Columbine Massacre happened. I know what it’s like to walk into class with the fear that I may not walk out." As a father of three school-aged boys, he emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of every child in America's educational institutions.
Rep. James stressed the need for action, stating, "Prayer is powerful but we must do more than pray. We must change policy too." He acknowledged the value of the Second Amendment but emphasized the urgency of protecting children from violence. "We deserve an America that can protect itself from tyranny without leaving its children vulnerable to terrorism," he added.
The first bill in the package, the IMPROVE (Incentivize Motivated Parents with Responsible Options for Vital Education) Safety for Schools Act, proposes a tax credit of $300 to encourage parents and guardians to purchase gun safes or storage items. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, a co-sponsor of the bill, expressed her support, stating, "The bill requires firearm safety training for parents, establishes a $300 non-refundable tax credit for firearm safety technologies including gun locks and gun safes, and expands access to information about gun safety through multiple avenues."
The second bill, the Protecting Kids on Social Media Act, aims to regulate the delivery of content by social media companies to young users. It also requires guardian permission for users under 18 to create social media accounts. Congressman Pat Ryan of New York, an original co-sponsor of the bill, emphasized the need to address the negative impact of social media on children's safety and mental health. "For too long, government has been a step behind big tech - that ends now," he declared.
The final bill, the School Security is National Security Act, would mandate that the President include a plan for securing America's schools in the administration's National Security Strategy. Rep. Ryan also voiced his support for this legislation, stating, "No parent dropping their kids off at school should have to worry about their child's safety."
Rep. James's school safety legislative package addresses mental health, constitutional responsibility, and the need for common-sense regulations. By introducing these bills, he aims to provide practical solutions to safeguard America's children and ensure that every child can return home safely at the end of each school day.
