WASHINGTON, D.C. – In honor of National Police Week, the House of Representatives passed several bills to support law enforcement and first responders across the nation. Representative John James (MI-10) voted in favor of each measure, reaffirming his commitment to supporting law enforcement officers.
Rep. James issued the following statement following National Police Week:
“Police Week is an opportunity to recognize and say thank you to the brave men and women who choose to wear a uniform and run towards danger, not away from it. Upholding the thin blue line between chaos and civility is a thankless job, and it’s one that has come under attack. Soft on crime policies, rogue prosecutors, and the demonization of our law enforcement officers have exacerbated crime and greatly increased the risks they face. This past week, House Republicans spearheaded a number of bills to support our law enforcement officers, condemn left-wing attempts to defund the police, and advance other similar pro-police measures. I was proud to vote in support of these bills, which all passed the House of Representatives.”
The Police Week Bills include:
H.R. 7343: The Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest and detain any illegal immigrant who assaults a law enforcement officer.
H.Res. 1213: Condemns calls to defund the police, which has increased violence towards law enforcement officers.
H.R. 8146: The Police Our Border Act requires the Attorney General to report to Congress on how the border crisis affects law enforcement at various levels.
H.Res. 1210: Condemns the border crisis and addresses the tremendous burdens faced by law enforcement officers as a result.
H.R. 7581: The Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act ensures adequate data collection to address the rise in anti-police attacks.
H.R. 354: The Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) Reform Act expands LEOSA exemptions allowing qualified active and retired law enforcement officers to carry firearms on state, local, and private property otherwise open to the public.
H.R. 7530: The DC CRIMES Act of 2024 reasserts Congressional control over Washington D.C., prohibiting its Council from pursuing soft-on-crime sentencing policies.
Additionally, Rep. James joined as a cosponsor for H.R.82: The Social Security Fairness Act would repeal Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) Social Security provisions—a priority for boosting recruitment and retention among law enforcement officers and first responders.
