Congressman John James | Rep. John James Official U.S House Headshot
Rep. John James (MI-10) has joined House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Senator Ted Cruz in signing onto a Supreme Court amicus brief. The case, Donald J. Trump v. Norma Anderson, et al., pertains to whether former President Donald Trump should remain on the ballot in Colorado. This comes after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump should be removed despite being the likely Republican nominee for president.
According to the signatories of the brief, the Colorado court disregarded important limitations that are meant to ensure that Congress controls the enforcement and removal of a president from office. They argue that the court adopted a broad interpretation of the phrase "engage in insurrection," which could potentially be misused and weaponized against political opponents by whichever party is in power. The legislators are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the decision made by the Colorado court.
Rep. James expressed his views on the matter, stating, "Left-wing legal hypocrites, who have been criticizing threats to 'our democracy' for the past six years, have ironically removed the leading candidate of a major political party from the ballot in Colorado. Comrade Putin would be proud of them." He further criticized the attempt to disenfranchise millions of Americans and expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will overturn this unconstitutional action.
In addition to Rep. James, 134 other House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, and 41 Senate Republicans have also signed onto the amicus brief.
The amicus brief can be read in its entirety on the official website.
