Today, Representative John James from Michigan's 10th district issued a statement concerning the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike. In his statement, Rep. James criticized the Biden Administration's approach to electric vehicle (EV) mandates and its impact on American workers.
James expressed concerns about the administration's EV policies, stating: “The Biden Administration has signaled that it does not care about UAW workers. The administration is forcing our country into a comply-or-die EV mandate that has already burned billions in American taxpayer dollars on a capacity that autos can’t afford, for demand that doesn’t exist, and with an infrastructure that isn’t built in the first place—it’s built in China."
He highlighted the hard work of UAW members by saying, "UAW workers get up early every morning and work hard for a living—that’s the Michigan way." He contrasted this with what he described as "coastal elites" in the Biden Administration who have more flexible working conditions.
James further criticized what he perceives as an alignment of U.S. policy with Chinese interests: "Michiganders don’t have that luxury, but while the administration works from home, they’re gutting our local economy by mandating an EV transition that caves to the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) agenda which has a chokehold on the American automotive industry."
Rep. James called for prompt negotiations between UAW and major automakers: “We all want the UAW and Big Three leaders to negotiate in good faith, to negotiate quickly, and to resolve this pressing matter so that we can refocus our energy on the real fight: holding the Biden Administration accountable for how they’re prioritizing our adversaries over our automotive workers."
He concluded by emphasizing where he believes efforts should be directed: "The fight is not with the workers on the picket line in Detroit; the fight is with bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., and that's what I’m focused on.”
