Representative John James (MI-10) and members of the Michigan congressional delegation have addressed a letter to Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, seeking more information on the recent decision to lay off 2,450 auto workers in Michigan. This decision follows a new tailpipe emissions standard rule from the Biden-Harris Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Representative James’ Congressional Review Act (CRA) to nullify this EPA rule was passed by the House with bipartisan support last week.
The letter states:
“On August 10th of this year, Stellantis announced it would lay off 2,450 workers — an entire shift — at the Ram 1500 Classic assembly plant in Warren, MI. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case but part of a broader trend. Michigan has been hemorrhaging automotive jobs for decades, with employment in the state’s auto plants, parts factories, and corporate offices shrinking by 35% since 1990. This decline has been driven by jobs moving to Mexico due to NAFTA, and to southern states like South Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia; which offer more favorable tax, tort, and regulatory environments for investors, businesses, workers and taxpayers to share benefit.”
Representative James commented on the situation:
“As a former business leader who ran an automotive supply chain company, I understand the auto industry intimately. Consumers, not bureaucrats should have choice over what vehicles they purchase. The comply-or-die EV mandates being pushed by Kamala Harris and Joe Biden are having real devastating consequences in my district including layoffs of 2,450 Stellantis workers in Warren MI. These policies which put activists over auto workers has no place in our politics. I will never give up fighting for workers in my district.”
