Due to heavy rain and saturated ground, the City of Warren has been inundated with reports of flooding in residential basements. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Macomb County, prompting the city to take immediate action to address the situation and assist affected residents.
"Our storm water basins and sewer basins are currently at capacity," stated an official from the city's Water and Waste Water Departments. "Our pump station is running at full capacity."
In response to the crisis, the Warren Emergency Response team has been mobilized, and Mayor Stone has reached out to the Macomb County Public Works Director for additional assistance.
"This is a severe rain event that will only be alleviated with time," said the city official.
The city urges residents experiencing flooding to promptly report their address to the Warren Water Department via Q-Alert or by calling (586) 759-9200. Alternatively, they can contact the Mayor's Office at (586) 574-4520 for assistance.
The Red Cross has also been enlisted to provide flood assistance. Residents can contact them at 1(800) 733-2767 and follow the prompts for assistance.
To aid in the cleanup and repair process, residents are advised to visit RedCross.org for information on Disaster Cleanup & Repair for their homes. Additionally, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offers further guidance on flood cleanup.
To minimize damage, residents are encouraged to take preventive measures. These include moving objects away from basement drains, removing valuables from the basement, elevating items off the floor, and storing them in waterproof containers. Residents are also reminded to ensure storm drain grates near their homes are clear of debris.
The Warren Fire Department stresses the importance of safety during flooding incidents. They advise residents and business owners to disconnect or shut off electrical service in the lower levels or basements of their properties. If there is no current flooding but a history of heavy rain events, it is recommended to turn off electricity at the panel for the lower levels or basement. Any device connected to an electrical outlet in flood-prone areas should be disconnected.
"It is crucial to contact a licensed electrician before turning electrical service back on in flooded areas to ensure no damage to the electrical system," cautioned the Fire Department representative.
Furthermore, all electrical devices that have been exposed to water should be considered damaged and replaced.
In an effort to prevent overflows during rainstorms, the Warren Water Department offers helpful tips, including signing up for Warren CAN, a community assistance network.
As the City of Warren grapples with the aftermath of this severe rain event, the cooperation and support of residents are vital. By promptly reporting flooding, following safety guidelines, and taking preventive measures, the community can work together to overcome the challenges posed by this natural disaster.
