Washington, D.C. – Rep. John James’ bill, the “Soo Locks Security and Economic Reporting Act,” has passed committee and is expected to receive a floor vote in the House of Representatives. The bill requires relevant government agencies to examine and report on any security deficiencies that pertain to the Soo Locks, located at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
“Michigan is the hub of America’s vehicle and military industry. We’re also home to the third-largest land border in the country,” James said. “Defending our national security and fortifying our economy transcends partisan politics. I’m grateful to have bipartisan support from both Rep. Scholten and Rep. Bergman in our effort to protect the Soo Locks for generations to come.”
Rep. James’ bill requires the Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Coast Guard and the Department of Defense, to submit a report on any security deficiencies that exist with respect to the Soo Locks. The bill also asks these departments to provide any recommendations as well as the cost of these recommendations.
The congressman’s bill is in response to a 2015 study by the Department of Homeland Security regarding the impact of an unexpected closure of the Soo Locks. The study found that a six-month shutdown would result in recession, closed factories, shuttered mines, and halt U.S. auto and appliance production for most of a year. Approximately 11 million jobs could be lost nationwide.
As a member of House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, James has been dedicated to safeguarding our national defense and vital commerce by finding ways to secure our critical infrastructure.
The bill was passed out of committee by a voice vote. The bill text is available here.
