Washington, D.C. – Rep. John James voted in favor of three bills honoring National Police Week. 

• H.R. 2494 – The POLICE Act makes the country safer by ensuring non-citizens who assault law enforcement officers can be deported from the United States. According to federal statistics, more than 43,000 law enforcement officers were assaulted in 2021 – an 11.2% increase from 2020.
• H.R. 3091 – The Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act establishes a program for federal law enforcement officers to purchase retired firearms at a discount, so long as the officer is in good standing with the agency.
• H. Con. Res. 40 — Expresses support for local law enforcement officers and condemns calls to defund, disband, dismantle, or abolish the police. 

“Being a police officer is often a thankless task. But when good men and women don’t step up to serve, we quickly feel their absence,” James said. “I am proud to stand with law enforcement, and these pieces of legislation are tangible proof. Whether it’s keeping fentanyl out of our communities or criminals off our streets, our public safety depends on these hometown heroes.” 

Rep. James met with the Sterling Heights Chief of Police earlier this year to discuss what resources police officers need in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of citizens in the community, as well as themselves. 

“Having been an officer in the U.S. Army, I understand what it’s like to patrol areas to protect people who would rather see you gone. Local law enforcement deserves honor and recognition everyday but especially during Police Week,” James said.

Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is observed May 15, and National Police Week was first established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. This year, National Police Week began Sunday, May 14 and will end Saturday, May 20, 2023.
