Washington, D.C. – In a speech on the House Floor On April 27, 2023, Rep. John James argued against a resolution withdrawing American troops from Somalia. The congressman noted his support for ending endless wars but warned of potential fallout from a hasty and reckless exit.
“The siren song of isolationism is tempting. But allowing vacuums of American influence around the world to be filled by terrorists and exploited by communists is a threat to American security at home,” James said. “I support reining in executive overreach into War Powers and other Article I affairs in a way that truly places America First. But as it stands before this body today, this resolution will not strengthen America at home or keep her safe abroad.”
Rep. James pointed to the disastrous consequences of Joe Biden’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal: billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded military equipment abandoned, 13 young American service members dead, and embarrassment on the world stage. The region is now as unstable as ever and China and the Taliban have filled the gaping hole America left behind.
Rep. James called for replacing the current declaration of war with an AUMF that focuses on today’s critical terrorist threats and requires Congress to stay engaged. He also encouraged an emphasis on soft power—technology, economic investment, political influence—and investment in our domestic industrial base.
