PRESS RELEASE

Suspect found Deceased on Scene after Shooting – Mental Illness appears to be a factor

Commissioner William Dwyer would like to provide an update regarding a shooting incident which occurred at a residence on Schoenherr Rd. north of 12 Mile on 02/24/2023 at approximately 09:15 am. There is no threat to the public as the suspect was found deceased on scene.

At approximately 09:15 am, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 29,000 block of Schoenherr Rd. regarding a shooting. A male subject had called 911 and advised that he was shot in the face by his adult son after an argument. Warren Police and Fire units quickly responded and encountered the 53-year-old male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to the face-area. The victim relayed to officers that he had been physically assaulted inside the residence by his 24-year-old son. During this altercation, the 24-year- old son retrieved a weapon and shot the victim. The 24-year-old son was last known to be inside the residence.

Members of the Warren Police Department Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit responded to the scene to assist patrol officers in hopes of a peaceful resolution to this incident. While on scene, officers were able to look inside the residence at which point they observed the 24-year-old suspect laying on the floor of the residence apparently deceased. Officers entered the residence and determined no other victims were present. Warren Police and Fire Units made contact with the 24-year-old suspect who was pronounced deceased on scene.

The male victim was transported to an area hospital wherein he remains critical condition. Investigators and Evidence Technicians are on scene and have executed a search warrant at the residence to look for additional evidence. Investigators have preliminary learned that the suspect had documented struggles with mental illness.

Commissioner Dwyer stated that “this incident is yet another tragic case of a person with a mental illness accessing a firearm and using it on a loved one during an altercation. Officers are encountering more and more persons with mental illnesses who are in need of help. Sadly, there are not enough treatment centers for the community to utilize as a resource for helping the mental ill. Too often law enforcement and the community have limited options and face long delays with getting people the proper mental health services they need before an act of violence occurs. This incident underscores the fact that mental illness is a serious issues which affects all of us.”
