Late in the evening, I received an email from a community member who expressed concern that my parent letter about Carleton Middle School did not focus on the adult male who was preying on a young female student, but rather focused on her poor decision.
After some careful thought, it is a very good point and one that I should have considered given the student was a victim in this situation. As a father of three daughters, I appreciate and understand the importance of helping children not be victims on social media or in personal relationships of any kind.
In fact, our district has developed a strong focus on the social emotional learning of our students, which, in today’s world, is especially important given the amount of hate and misinformation that is spread on social media.
To provide some additional support for parents, I encourage you to visit the district’s Online Safety Resources and the State of Michigan Internet Safety Resources for more information. Please know that we have found some students are able to avoid child monitoring apps like Life360, Google Family Link, and NetNanny by simply using a friend’s phone, which increases the challenge for all of us. I appreciate your support, and please talk with your children.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Livernois,
Ph.D. Superintendent
