Shelby Township issued the following announcement on Oct. 14.
Ghosts, goblins, princesses, pirates and other costumed kids can join in the fun at several of Shelby Township‘s annual Halloween events.
The festivities kick off at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 with the annual Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department Halloween Spooktacular at Heritage Lake at 52700 Van Dyke Ave. Sponsored by Genisys Credit Union, the Spooktacular allows families to take trick-or-treaters around the lake before showing the movie "Scoob!” at 7:30 p.m.
“The Spooktacular is a great event because it combines all the fun of a Halloween party with trick-or-treating,” Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Director Joe Youngblood said. “It‘s great to see all the kids having a blast together getting an early dose of Halloween before the actual day, and it’s fun to see all of the decorated booths around the lake, too.”
Along with township booths, local businesses participate in the Spooktacular by sponsoring a booth to greet trick-or-treaters. While they are collecting treats, participants can view the entries in the 2021 Shelby Township Scarecrow Contest.
Until Oct. 26, visitors can view the scarecrows around the lake and vote for their favorite at shelbytwp.org/contests. The township will announce the winning scarecrow on the website and its social media on Oct. 30.
Trick or treating is free for Shelby Township and Utica residents and costs $10 for nonresidents. Participants need to register for the rain-or-shine event at 586-731-0300 or by emailing shelbyprm@shelbytwp.org with your name, address, email address, phone number and the number of participating children. Online registration is also available at register.shelbytwp.org.
The Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center keeps the festivities going with its annual Haunted Nature Center 6-9 p.m. Oct. 22-23 with a haunt-filled nature center where you’ll find costumed characters, fun scenes and spooky stories. Some of our characters will be handing out treats to anyone entering their lair.
This playfully eerie event is ideal for the entire family, and patrons should register in advance. The last admission each night will be at 8:30 p.m. An adult should accompany children. Kids are welcome to dress up and bring a small bag for treats. The nature center closes during the day Oct. 20-24 to set up this event.
“A lot of staff time and effort goes into transforming the nature center into a ‘haunted wonderland,’” Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center Coordinator Elizabeth Schultz said. “Plus, many volunteers show up to run the event, so it’s a fun way to celebrate the season as well as get to know the people who make our nature center a fantastic place all year.”
The Shelby Township Library has Halloween fun for all ages. The programs start with Michigan’s Most Haunted at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 as Hillary and Jessica of Mystic Mitten Paranormal Group share chilling and thrilling tales from their investigations around the state of Michigan.
At 6 p.m. Oct. 22, the library hosts a Teen Build-a-Monster Workshop for grades 7-12. Teens can build a monster using dolls, plushies and other materials provided. Afterward, there will be some eerie fun with ghost stories. The library’s youngest patrons can take home a spooky surprise with the Halloween Fun at Home Kit for grades PK-5. Registration is required and opens on Oct. 16. Kits include a bag of Halloween activities and treats. Supplies are limited, so register to get your kit. The pick-up is Saturday, Oct. 30.
Library staff invites trick-or-treaters to dress up and stop by the library at 51680 Van Dyke Ave. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Oct. 30, to collect treats.
On Oct. 31, trick-or-treaters take to the streets throughout Shelby Township's neighborhoods. The Shelby Township Police Department will sound the start of trick or treating at 6 p.m. with a blast from the township's emergency sirens. The police will sound the alarm again at 8 p.m. to signal the close of trick-or-treating. Motorists should reduce traffic during these times and schedule trips before or after trick or treating if possible.
