At least one medical doctor is supporting a bill that would block COVID-19 patients from being housed alongside nursing home residents, The Center Square reported on July 15.
Dr. Rebecca Copf, a family medicine specialist in Dearborn, has backed Sen. Peter Lucido's (R-Shelby) bill, which goes against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s policy that is now in place, placing COVID-19 patients with those living in nursing homes.
Copf testified, saying, “Even with the new guidelines, sufficient personal protective equipment and training, it would be very difficult to avoid cross-contamination [from staff] because of the frequent assistance required of these patients,” according to The Center Square.

She added that while health care workers potentially carrying the virus know it is a risk in and of itself. “By forcing them to work with known infected COVID patients, we increase that risk,” she said, according to The Center Square.
Copf said the best move would be to no longer house COVID-19 patients with senior citizens, who are a particularly vulnerable group in terms of contracting the virus.
