Warren Consolidated Schools issued the following announcement on June 16.
Congratulations to Warren Mott High School recent graduate, Hilary Adeleke for being chosen Macomb Daily Newspaper Student of the Week. Hilary graduated top of her class with a 4.666 grade point average and will study molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University in the fall.
She is a first-generation American, with her parents natives of Nigeria who came to the United States in the 1990s in search of the American dream and a better life. She has three much older half-siblings who remained in Africa. Her youngest sibling, a 25-year-old brother, followed to the U.S. a couple of years ago.
But essentially, she grew up as an only child. Through her parents, she was often made aware of the hardships back in their home country. Several of Adeleke's nieces suffer from illnesses common to people of color in Africa. Those with medical issues, Adeleke said, must pay up front for the cost of any procedures, often a difficult or impossible task. She learned about how many people simply can't afford medical care and about the large health disparities within the Nigerian community.
