On the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Congressman John James (MI-10), along with Congressman John Moolenaar (MI-02) and Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18), introduced legislation to designate September 11 through September 17, 2025 as Patriot Week.

Patriot Week was established in 2009 by Judge Michael Warren of Oakland County and his daughter Leah. The initiative aims to increase public awareness about the nation's founding documents and important historical figures. The week begins on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks and concludes on Constitution Day, which marks the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia in 1787.

Congressman James reflected on his experience during the events of September 11: “When our nation was attacked on 9/11, I was a cadet at West Point. My class was the first to know that we were going to war after graduation day,” said Congressman James. “I served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and if given the chance, I’d do it all over again. This country is worth fighting and sacrificing for and I am deeply proud to support this resolution establishing Patriot Week from September 11th to the 17th. Our nation’s rich history and enduring values deserve to be honored and celebrated. America is the greatest country in human history, and it is our duty to uphold these values for generations to come.”

Congressman Ryan also spoke about his memories from that day: “Congressman James and I were in our second year at West Point on 9/11. We swore to never forget the heroes we lost that day, and now, alongside Congressman Moolenaar, we’re putting those words into action,” said Congressman Ryan. “In the weeks and months that followed 9/11, Americans demonstrated remarkable unity, compassion, and a reclaimed patriotism that illuminated one of our darkest hours and embodied the best of humanity. As we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice that day, let’s recommit to the bonds we share as Americans – love for our country and one another.”

Congressman Moolenaar added: “Patriot Week is a time to reflect on our nation’s founding values, encourage a deeper exploration of our nation's history, and remember the innocent lives lost on 9/11. I am proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution to recognize this week as Patriot Week; to encourage Americans to celebrate the freedoms we cherish and honor our Constitution.”

John James has represented Michigan's 10th District in Congress since 2023.

James was born in Detroit in 1981 and currently resides in Farmington Hills.
