This week, Representative John James from Michigan's 10th District introduced a resolution to establish March 6, 2025, as "Great Lakes Day." The bipartisan effort has gained support from several other Michigan representatives including Debbie Dingell, Bill Huizenga, Jack Bergman, Hillary Scholten, Haley Stevens, Shri Thanedar, Rashida Tlaib, Lisa McClain, Kristen McDonald Rivet, John Moolenaar, and Tim Walberg.
The Great Lakes hold over 90% of the United States' freshwater supply and more than 20% of the world's. They are vital for providing drinking water to over 40 million people. Additionally, they play a crucial role in the regional economy by facilitating transportation and contributing $3.1 trillion to the gross domestic product.
The resolution also acknowledges Lake St. Clair as the "Heart of the Great Lakes," noting its importance for drinking water provision, recreation activities, and commercial use.
Rep. James is actively involved in efforts to protect Michigan’s water resources through his membership in the Great Lakes Task Force. His previous initiatives include co-sponsoring the Great Lakes Restoration initiative with an investment of $368 million and leading resolutions against Canadian nuclear storage near the lakes. He also secured $2 million for Macomb County to address pollution in Lake St. Clair.
Upon introducing this resolution, Rep. James stated: “I’m proud to introduce this legislation designating March 6th as 'Great Lakes Day.' Michigan is blessed to be a Great Lakes state... The Great Lakes hosts a $62 billion-dollar annual economy... Michiganders know that the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair are so much more than just bodies of water—they are part of our way of life and must be protected.”
