Representative John James from Michigan's 10th district has added his name to a discharge petition in the U.S. House of Representatives, aiming to prompt a floor vote on H.R. 82, known as the Social Security Fairness Act. This move aligns with James' ongoing efforts to reinforce Social Security and Medicare rights for American seniors.
In a statement, Rep. James expressed his commitment to protecting these benefits: “Our seniors and their Social Security and Medicare benefits are not a bargaining chip for Big Government. The Social Security Fairness Act makes sure that these rights are protected,” he stated. He emphasized the bill's importance in preventing individuals who receive state or local government pensions from losing their Social Security benefits.
The proposed legislation seeks to eliminate the government pension offset, which can reduce Social Security benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who also have government pensions. Additionally, it aims to remove the windfall elimination provision that affects individuals receiving pensions or disability benefits from employers that do not withhold Social Security taxes.
Rep. James highlighted his dedication by saying, “I’m proud to stand up for our seniors—and will never waver in my support for them.”
