The Warren Police Department is reaching out to the public for assistance with a retired police dog, Kantor, who is battling cancer. Kantor, an 8-year-old German Shepherd, served with the department until June 2024 and was involved in numerous operations including drug detection and search missions.

Officer Nicholas Hofer, Kantor's partner, discovered a lump near Kantor's throat shortly after his retirement. Tests confirmed that Kantor has lymphoma, which has begun to spread. Michigan State University doctors have recommended chemotherapy as treatment.

To cover the costs of these treatments, the department is seeking donations through the Warren Police & Fire Benevolent Association. Contributions will ensure that all medical expenses are covered for Kantor's care. "For the last 5 years, Kantor has been the best partner I could have asked for," Officer Hofer shared. "This is not the retirement we had in mind for him."

Donations can be made via GoFundMe or by sending checks to the Warren Police Department addressed to the Benevolent Association. Further information can be obtained from Warren Police Commissioner Charles Rushton at 586-574-4803 or 586-823-9845.
