Macomb Community College announces MORE summer semester beginning August 1

More summer

The Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment (MORE), a lifelong learning initiative presented by Macomb Community College, will offer an abbreviated summer schedule of ten courses Aug. 1 through Aug. 12. This summer’s short, noncredit courses include a mix of five classes and five excursions to local areas of interest including a wrap-up picnic at the Lake St. Clair Metropark. For $10 members can register for two classes/excursions with the option of adding the wrap-up picnic for an additional $10. For $36, members can choose four classes/excursions with the option of adding the picnic for $10. Early birds can register for four classes before July 8 and attend the picnic for free.

“Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds around us,” said William Wood, director, Cultural Affairs and Community Engagement, Macomb Community College. “MORE’s combination of summer classes and trips will take you from the far reaches of space to paddling to the past during a voyager canoe experience.”

The classes each last approximately two hours, with time reserved for a question-and-answer period. Courses are taught by subject matter experts and cover a variety of topics. Some highlights of the summer MORE semester include:

  • Tour the Detroit Zoo Penguinarium: Join Bethany Wilson, education coordinator for the Detroit Zoo, for a tour of the Polk Penguin Conversation Center, the largest conservation center for penguins in the world. Learn about penguins, their habitat and penguin-related conservation work being done at the zoo and in the Falkland Islands.
  • Hiking in Southeast Michigan: Macomb County has a large array of trails to explore from the very easy to challenging. Erin Parker, interpretive services supervisor, Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority, has a wealth of information on these trails and will lead a hike for MORE attendees at Stoney Creek Metropark, offering a longer and more rustic habitat trail or a shorter but scenic landscape trail.
  • James Webb Telescope First Images: Learn about the James Webb Telescope and see the earliest high-quality photographs taken by this newly commissioned deep space telescope. Angelo DiDonato and Bob Berta, popular MORE astronomy presenters, will lead the discussion and share images from further out in space than ever before seen.
Online registration is now open for MORE’s summer semester. To view the course catalog and to register go to www.LorenzoCulturalCenter.com/more. For additional information, email MORE@Macomb.edu.

All summer courses will be held at the Macomb University Center on Macomb Community College’s Center Campus at 44575 Garfield Road, Clinton Township. Excursion locations and meeting places are noted in the course catalog.
