Community Letter 06012022

Megaphone gd7b38fb34 1280

6th grade Carter Middle School student made the very poor decision to post two pictures on social media – one of himself holding an airsoft pellet gun and one that is a re-post of another student, who does not attend WCS, holding a weapon with some indirect threats.

Neither threat mentioned Carter, but the way misinformation travels on social media, I wanted to keep you informed.

In response, the Carter administration, with support from the WCS Security & Crisis Management Team, responded quickly, and like we have seen many times before, the student is now in the custody of the Warren Police awaiting very serious criminal charges. This again is a student making a very bad choice, and we do not believe the threats are credible. Unfortunately, this letter gives me another opportunity to remind you to talk with your children about making good choices.

Please help them understand that if they post inappropriate things on social media, they will get into serious trouble every time, and create a significant hardship for you as parents. On a positive note, I am very pleased that a student did the right thing and reported this to an adult, instead of spreading it on social media, allowing for a quick resolution. We have found that one of our most effective tools for keeping our schools safe is having students who feel comfortable sharing difficult information with adults.
