Macomb Community College to host Great Pumpkin Fest

Announcement2

Macomb Community College issued the following announcement on Sept. 23.

Macomb Community College will hold the Great Pumpkin Fest, a fun event for the whole family, Saturday, Oct. 16, 12 – 4 p.m. at the Sports and Expo Center on Macomb’s South Campus in Warren.

The event is free and features activities for all ages including performances by Mad Science of Detroit, discovery stations with engaging activities based on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts, a fleet of food trucks, cider and donuts, music and country line dancing featuring the college’s show choir --the Macombers, and a fall market with corn stalks, pumpkins, mums and hay bales. There will also be a number of raffles, including a 50/50, with proceeds benefiting the Macomb Student Immediate Relief Fund, which provides emergency assistance to students struggling to continue at Macomb due to financial hardship.

“Fall is a great time to get together and enjoy Michigan’s harvest season,” said Christina Ayar, director, Macomb Community College Foundation. “The Great Pumpkin Fest is meant to bring the family together for an afternoon of fall fun, highlighted by learning new and exciting things through hands-on discovery stations and Mad Science performances.”

Mad Science of Detroit introduces and explains STEM concepts through entertaining, youth-oriented scientific experiments. The Fire and Ice show includes foggy dry ice storms, shivering scissors, bubbly showers and demonstrates how giant beach balls can float in midair. Volunteers from the audience will also get a chance to taste a special “burp” potion. The Mad Science showtimes are 12:30 and 2 p.m. with general seating.

The discovery stations continue the theme of fun learning for kids, including:

  • Interactive Drone Zone: Fly a drone through an obstacle course, and program and operate a mini-robot car
  • Slippery Science Station: Make your own slime to take home while learning about the properties of polymers
  • Electricity Station: Discover the connection between magnetism and electricity (and make your hair stand on end), and build and test electrical circuits
  • Bubbling Potions Station: Take a Mad Science shower with dry ice, and explore the states of matter
  • Money Saving Station: Learn about saving money and open a first bank account
The Great Pumpkin Fest is presented by First State Bank. Participation by Mad Science of Detroit is underwritten by a grant from the Foren Family Foundation.

Masks must be worn inside the Sports and Expo Center. For more information and to preregister for the Great Pumpkin Fest, go to www.macomb.edu/greatpumpkinfest.

The Sports and Expo Center is located on Macomb’s South Campus on the northwest corner of Hayes and Martin roads in Warren, Michigan. The address for South Campus is 14500 E. 12 Mile Road, Warren, MI 48088.
