MACOMB COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Macomb Community College announces schedule for virtual SOAR Macomb fall semester beginning Oct.12

Macomb Community College issued the following announcement on Sept. 23.

The Society of Active Retirees (SOAR) Macomb, a lifelong learning initiative presented by Macomb Community College, will offer 30 noncredit courses during its upcoming fall semester, Oct. 12 through Nov. 6. The online classes will be held via Zoom and last two hours, reserving the final 30 minutes for question and answer. For a single registration fee of $75, members can participate is as many classes as they choose.

“Our upcoming fall semester will give SOAR Macomb members the opportunity to continue exploring the world around them, while remaining in the comfort and security of their homes,” said William Wood, director of cultural affairs and community engagement, Macomb Community College. “The online format also means the elimination of sold-out classes, ensuring our members can access the personal enrichment opportunities they seek.”

Classes are taught by subject matter experts, including Macomb faculty, and cover topics as diverse as financial investing, popular music from the Roaring ‘20s and the art of cooking with eggs. Some highlights of the fall selection of classes include:

  • The Science of Happiness: Peggi J. Tabor, Ph.D., will look at recent studies on understanding happiness, what causes it and what limits our experiencing it. 
  • Choosing Wisely in the New World of Health Care: Judith A. Runk, M.Ed., RN, will explore tools individuals can use to be a better-informed health care consumers and discuss the world of digital health care. 
  • Michigan During the Great Depression: Macomb faculty member Dr. Larry Bukowski will lead a discussion on how Michigan weathered the Great Depression of the 1930s. 
  • My Mother’s Voice: Award-winning storyteller Judy Sima will share the story of her mother’s encounter with the Gestapo on Kristallnacht -- the Night of Broken Glass, her escape from Germany during World War II and her adjustment to a new life in America.
