Warren Consolidated Schools issued the following announcement on Aug. 8.
Dear WCS Community,
As anticipated, things are changing rapidly over whether schools should re-open for in-person instruction or start online through a virtual option. In fact, some districts across the state have already announced their decision to go virtual for the fall, citing well-documented safety concerns.
In my conversations with our parents and staff, nearly everyone understands the challenges of bringing students and teachers safely back into classrooms and onto school buses given how the coronavirus spreads and the need for social distancing, wearing masks, and managing students throughout the school. They also understand that we have so many students in our community who desperately need in-person support from our outstanding teachers and support staff.
An important step in our work to find the right solution for our schools, our principals and staff will continue working on our Return to School plan that will help support an eventual recommendation to the Board of Education for how school should open in September, whether in-person, virtual, or a combination of both.
Also, to clear up any misinformation, our Board of Education recently had to approve an initial Return to School plan to comply with Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-142, which required us to submit, by August 15th, a plan that reflected her Roadmap for each phase. Not submitting an approved plan would have put us out of compliance with the order. This initial plan will be used by our principals and modified accordingly once a review of our facilities has been completed.
On a related note, I wanted share with you that since we launched our Fall Options Parent Survey, about 8% of our parents have officially registered for our virtual option. In addition, the survey has really helped us understand the many needs and challenges our community faces during this very difficult time.
As we look ahead, stay tuned to wcskids.net for more information and future meetings. As always, I will keep you updated as we move through this process. Please continue to stay safe and be healthy.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Livernois, Ph.D.
Superintendent
