Warren Mayor Jim Fouts is not happy about the arrest of a black Amazon driver who parked a van on the incorrect side of the street, Metro Times reported.
The white officer who arrested the driver, who neighbors described as respectful, has also been put on administrative leave following the arrest, which was recorded and streamed on Facebook Live. Considering the racial climate in the nation and abroad after the death of George Floyd at the hands of four police officers, the footage caused more public outcry, even from Fouts.
Fouts referred to the arrest as “outrageous and unacceptable” on Facebook. Interestingly enough, the status has since been deleted “at the request of the Warren Police Commissioner,” Metro Times reported.
Still, Fouts’ full statement was captured before he deleted it. He also wrote that he ordered the firing of the officer involved, according to Metro Times.
“I have zero tolerance for this disgusting act against an innocent person. If the last two weeks have taught us anything, it is that bad behavior by ANY police officer will not be tolerated!” he said on Facebook.
Fouts wants to take things a step further and have the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office and U.S. Attorney’s Office step in and investigate the incident.
So far police have started an internal probe and was slated to hold a press conference to give more details the week of June 10th.
Amazon also released a statement and vowed to take part in the investigation as well.
“We see what others see in this video, and it’s unacceptable. We expect a swift investigation and full accountability for those involved. Amazon will deploy all necessary resources to investigate the matter with our Delivery Service Provider, as well as to represent and support the driver," Amazon's statement said.
