According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the nation’s older population is rising as numbers among younger groups fall. Between 2020 and 2024, the American population age 65 and older grew by 13%, while Americans under 18 declined by 1.7%. The total number of older adults in the U.S. has climbed sharply since 1920, rising from 4.9 million a century ago to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicates that about half of adults in this age group—around 28 million people—could need long-term care and assistance. More than a third are projected to eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
